It's still hard for foreign companies to get established in Japan, but the fact that the country represents a potentially lucrative market means plenty of businesses rise to the challenge. The Schott company is one of them, a technology-based group that develops and manufactures speciality glass. For forty years it only distributed in Japan, but it began production in the country when it realised that it boosted sales. Eight years ago, Schott set up a joint venture with Japanese electrnics manufacturer NEC. Today, Jörg Raupach heads the company NEC Schott, which employs 200 workers in a factory near Kyoto to producing electronic parts. Manuela Kasper-Claridge caught up with him to find out about the project's difficult early days, latest challenges, and how the company is benefiting from Japan's innovative strengths.
