The bottle diggers have been in, they have unearthed some real gems for us to hunt out! The top find among them? Is it the gorgeous capstan ink well? It is similar to the one we found in Kirkcaldy, just across the River Forth from Edinburgh, but this one has none of the C-marks or rugged qualities, typical of sea glass and that find... this inkwell is in fantastic condition despite the years it has spent underground! We also find a host of awesome treasures - Codd Bottles, jam jars, a great range of stoppers, tiny medicine bottles and so much more!! We love the doll's house tea cup and jug - so cute! The OXO bottle is a cool find - OXO was similar to the better known and more often found Bovril jars! For anyone interested in what we can and cannot know about the meaning of TW on clay pipe bowls... This might get a bit dull for some... A few weeks ago, we spoke briefly about TW pipes and presented the generally agreed idea that the TW stands for Thomas White - a pipe maker so well known for the quality of his pipes that very many makers are said to have used his initials to sell their pipes... Thomas white was so closely associated with clay pipes that, by the 1920's, smokers in Edinburgh referred to pipes as 'Tam Whites'. A difference of opinion followed our piece a week later - another channel suggested that we had missed their findings, which make a definitive claim that TW means "The Workman". We did not miss that claim - we just do not think it holds water for several reasons. In fact, there is no remotely scientific way to make such a definitive claim - science relies on inductive reasoning which can only ever lead to a theory, not a truth or fact. The idea that TW means "The Workman" relies on deductive reasoning - an empirical observation that leads to a conclusion. Deductive reasoning is, for this reason, opposed to Karl Popper's rule of falsification - that is, for any idea to be scientific, it must be open to investigation which can render it false. In other words, science is a progressive process, which relies of refutability in order to move past unworkable or untestable old ideas. The idea that TW means "The Workman", is based on an old argument, and that argument is no longer held by its author. There is no primary evidence to link the letters TW to the words, "The Workman" - without any actual evidence or even any sound anecdotal accounts, it is not possible to claim a connection of this kind. Of course, this means that "Thomas White" is also a theory, not a fact - which is why we said, "we like to think that..." We err on the side of that theory because it has solid anecdotal support and because many experts support the idea, making it a more justifiable theory. At the end of the day though, we can only say this - it is most likely that TW refers to Thomas White, and we only say that with the support of a researcher who has studied these pipes, published in peer reviewed academic journals on the subject, and has curated museum exhibits on clay pipes. Here are a few links to some relevant literature for anyone interested: Gallagher's piece on TW Pipes & Hammond's comment: http://scpr.co/PDFs/Newsletters/SCPR2... See page 9, where Hammond's 2010 piece, notes the relationship between TW and "The Workman" is coincidental, and not as likely as he had suggested back in 1989. http://scpr.co/PDFs/Newsletters/SCPR7...
