Plenty of people have sent messages to Wednesday’s Child in recent weeks, asking an ‘inside view’ on whether it’s possible to recover alone? Why an uplift in such a question? Well, perhaps because a lot of these people may have seen a pause to their in-person GP support, or to their community team appointments. The question to ask of yourself in this situation is, how determined am I to recover, and is it possible I’d like to make an excuse of the fact that lockdown has created an interruption in my more formal support. None of us underestimate how tough it is to recover from an eating disorder, and many of us in the Wednesday’s Child team have travelled that journey ourselves, so we truly truly get it. But recovery can, in the very least, go an awful long way without statutory support if you so choose. This is not to say that the vast majority of people won’t need professional help, but one of the biggest ingredients anyone can bring to the recovery approach – is willpower, desire, dogged determination, and downright stubbornness. Now come on, we all know there’s a lot of us with those ingredients. Please don’t make an excuse of lockdown to at least ‘begin’ your recovery. Even if you need subsequent therapy and professional expertise, then anything you begin to do yourself will certainly aid you. Do not waste a moment. Lockdown or not, virus or not, your journey begins with you. Get going. There’s not a moment to lose.
