This funeral cake that spans the Orthodox Christian world is what sparked my interest in Christian-specific foods. I traveled to Athens and Marathon, Greece to experience how koliva is prepared, blessed and shared for the Saturday of Souls, the day before the Day of Pentecost. When I lived in San José, there was a Palestinian-Christian family at Trinity Cathedral - San Jose. They brought koliva for coffee hour the prescribed days after the death of the patriarch of their family. It was blessed during the service. Finally, almost a year ago, on June 2 & 3, I got the gift of learning more about the spirituality of preparing and sharing food. For my personal project during my sabbatical, I had a look at Christian-specific foods. While the only official Christian-specific food there is in the Sacrament, I believe that there must be cultures in which a particular food holds a special place in the life of a specifically Christian community, almost exclusively prepared and shared by Christians on Christian holidays. This video series explores 5 foodstuffs in 4 countries that are expressions of food, faith and culture. One video will be published each week on Friday.
