NSO RIAM Concerto Competition 2023 - Kalle Peura - Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

The National Symphony Orchestra and Royal Irish Academy of Music Concerto Project 2023 saw four of RIAM’s most exciting, emerging student-artists making their concerto debuts with the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Maloney, in Dublin’s National Concert Hall on Wednesday 31 May. Soprano Lauren McCann, mezzo-soprano Emma Power, pianist Kalle Peura and Rachel Nolan on flute performed cornerstone works of the repertoire, all virtuosic showpieces for the soloist: Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate, Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Ravel’s Shéhérazade, and Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. The NSO Concerto Project provides RIAM students at an advanced level of study – from final-year Bachelor of Music to Master in Music Performance and Recital Artist Diploma level – with an opportunity to perform in a professional setting with an orchestra. For this inaugural NSO Concerto Project concert, performers were selected following two competitive rounds of auditions before a panel that included NSO General Manager Anthony Long, RIAM Director Deborah Kelleher and all four Heads of the Keyboard, Strings, Vocal Studies, and Wind, Brass and Percussion Faculties.
