My specialty is orthopedic surgery, and within that specialty, foot and ankle surgeries is my expertise. My brother was also pre-med at the time. As a younger brother, sometimes you just follow what your older brother does, so I found myself going to medical school. When I came down here to Miami, there were not any orthopedic surgeons that had performed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery. That put me at a very great advantage in terms of seeing great numbers of patients that were referred to me. My goal really is to make sure that the patient gets back to doing what they love doing and that they're happy and satisfied. That's what gives me joy or enrichment of what I do. [What sets the center of excellence apart?] Dr. Tom San Giovanni: I would define our group as a compilation, let's say, of very knowledgeable and caring physicians that have a passion to bring innovative procedures to our patients. It could be a professional athlete or it could be your mother; all I really want to see is a smile on their face and that they're doing the things that they enjoy doing. That's what really gives me a passion for what I do. [What is your patient philosophy?] Dr. Tom San Giovanni: I like helping people. I'm a people person. I have all these old women that they'll come in and they'll give me a hug and kiss, and I got lipstick on the side of my face. I love that stuff. This, I tell you, has probably been the most rewarding field. I can't imagine doing anything else with this part of my life, but I enjoy being a very good doctor. During surgery, you may have an hour and a half of their life. When I leave that operating room, I want to be sure that I leave that operating room knowing that I did everything that I could to make that person better. That's going to affect that person probably for many years to come. It can't be good enough; it has to be right. At least, that's how I feel. When I leave, I want to be sure that I've helped them.
