Devendra Banhart plays a cover of the Cocteau Twins song "Rilkean Heart" live in concert at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, California on May 18, 2025. Rilkean Heart originally appeared as an acoustic song on Cocteau Twins' Twinlights EP (1995). They later released a lusher, more atmospheric version on their final studio album, Milk & Kisses (1996). The song was inspired by singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who was an ardent admirer of Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Devendra Banhart is a Los Angeles based Venezuelan-American folk singer-songwriter and visual artist. This was the final night of his May solo tour. ======================== Devendra Banhart solo tour dates: May 7 - Phoenix, AZ @ Musical Instrument Museum May 9 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever May 10 - Ojai, CA @ The Topa Institute May 13 - Solana Beach, CA @ Belly Up Tavern May 15 - Santa Cruz, CA @ Rio Theatre May 16 - Sonoma, CA @ Gundlach Bundschu Winery May 18 - San Francisco, CA @ Herbst Theatre September 11 - Homer, NY @ Center for the Arts September 12 - Woodstock, NY @ Bearsville Theater September 13 - Brattleboro, VT @ The Stone Church September 14 - Portland, ME @ Space Gallery September 15 - Brooklyn, NY @ National Sawdust September 16 - Brooklyn, NY @ National Sawdust September 17 - Boston, MA @ Institute of Contemporary Art ===================== Devendra Banhart official bio: Devendra Banhart (b. 1980, Houston, Texas) lives and works in Los Angeles. An internationally renowned musician considered a pioneer of the “freak folk” and “New Weird America” movements, Banhart has toured, performed, and collaborated with Vashti Bunyan, Yoko Ono, Os Mutantes, the Swans, ANOHNI, Caetano Veloso, and Beck, amongst many others. His musical work has always existed symbiotically alongside his pursuits in the other fine arts. Music was always a passion for Banhart, and he discovered it in ways both magical and haphazard. As a boy in Caracas, says Banhart, “I was surrounded by salsa, merengue, cumbia, some bossa nova—that was ubiquitous, you’d hear it on any street.” In high school, Banhart became obsessed with rocksteady, bluebeat, and ska, which he’d learned about via skateboarding videos. Finishing high school, he thought he would pursue a visual arts career so he enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute, but he soon dropped out in favor of exploring music. He has, however, successfully maintained a parallel career as a visual artist: Banhart’s distinctive, minutely inked, often enigmatic drawings have appeared in galleries all over the world, including the Art Basel Contemporary Art Fair in Miami; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels; and Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art and Nicodim Gallery. For Banhart, his career remains “an adventure and an exploration.” Banhart admits, “I don’t really take care of my voice, but, just like with playing guitar, you get more familiar with it, and you get better at it. I’ve always said that I’m very good at not knowing how to play the guitar but, really, it’s just that I’m very comfortable with the utter uncertainty of my approach.” =================== Rilkean Heart lyrics: Rilkean heart, I looked for you To give me transcendent experiences To transport me out of self and aloneness And alienation into a sense of One-ness and connection ecstatic and magical I became a junkie for it I came looking for the next high And I'm sorry I've been putting the search on the wrong place I understand that you're confused, Feeling overwhelmed Well that's a feeling state from then The reality Becoming truly self-reliant and become connected With something beyond me That is where I have to go I'm so sorry I've been putting the search on the wrong place You're lost and don't know what to do But that's not all of you That's your reality today And that is all okay Written by Elizabeth Fraser / Robin Guthrie / Simon Raymonde ======================= #devendrabanhart #singersongwriter #folk #folkmusic #freakfolk #newweirdamerica #psychedelicfolk #indiefolk #neofolk #altfolk #lyrics #cocteautwins #elizabethfraser #rilkeanheart #coversong #coversongs #coverversion #cover #livecover #live #music #livemusic #concert #concertvideo #liveinconcert #frontrow #frontrowview #fanshot #fanvideo #audienceview #livefromtheaudience #bootleg #sanfrancisco #sf #sfmusic
