£1 million fire. A livestreamed attack. And a terror plot orchestrated on British soil by the Russian Wagner Group. This is the true story of how Counter Terrorism officers uncovered a Russian-ordered arson attack in east London and stopped a second attack before it could happen. In March 2024, a warehouse in Leyton used by Ukrainian-linked businesses was deliberately set on fire. What looked like a standard arson case quickly escalated when officers uncovered links to Wagner, the Russian mercenary group now classed as a terrorist organisation in the UK. The suspects filmed the attack and streamed it live. Forensics, CCTV, ANPR, and mobile data helped detectives piece together the plot, revealing messages sent to Russian operatives, plans for further attacks in Mayfair, and a clear recruitment chain from Britain’s streets to Moscow's orders. Four men: Nii Mensah, Jakeem Rose, Ugnius Asmena, and Paul English have been found guilty of aggravated arson with intent to endanger life. Two others, Dylan Earl and Jake Reeves, pleaded guilty, including under the new National Security Act 2023, for acting on behalf of a hostile state. This case is one of the first to use the UK's new counter-terror powers and exposes how foreign states may use criminal proxies to carry out attacks in Britain.
