Being a Reading Detective

Do your students struggle with reading comprehension. Teach your students how to become reading detectives. Watch this video taken of Indi Frederking, ELA Curriculum and Instruction Coach at Peoria Unified teaching a reading lesson to students from Mrs. Christina Laubmeier's 3rd grade class at Vistancia Elementary. In this lesson, Indi walks students through the steps of being a good reading detective. Students are taught to do a page walk to gather information or clues about the topic and main idea of the text, by making observations using text features, asking questions, making predictions, and inferences. Students are taught to connect genre with author's purpose. Using a paired nonfiction selection, students make connections and discuss their findings. Students learn how to use close reading strategies and make simple meaningful annotations to increase their understanding of complex text.
