I've noticed one of the visiting magpies has a white dot on the back of their neck. I'm hoping this is a marking in their plumage, and not just some dirt or a loose feather. It'll really help in keeping track of individuals. I'll start calling this one Dot. Now, Dot almost always appears with a second magpie, who'll I'll call Dash, for want of a better name. I haven't picked out any distinguishing features on Dash yet, but I'm wondering if the two are pairing off. Nesting season for magpies begins in March. Dot and Dash seem to tolerate each other in close proximity; there is almost always a call and response when they approach each other; and Dash seems to fluff up their feathers when Dot arrives on the scene, giving them almost a crest like appearance to their head. I don't know that much about about magpies, so this might all be total rubbish, it's just what I've observed in the footage. I don't even know the sexes of Dot and Dash, and if they're opposites. If anyone knows more about magpies, I'd love to know your interpretation of the behaviour. I'm keeping a record of all visitors to the garden that activate the camera trap.
