I found this shocking when I heard it. And frustrating. TEST this: if you search toys on many 3rd party sites, the “sponsored” options are often ones that really don’t necessarily look safe. Here’s the details - YES, the CPSC puts out requirements that items marketed as “toys” for children have to meet. BUT, there’s no one who actually checks everything before it goes on the shelves - so yes, any could technically (it would be illegal, but they could easily do it), manufacture whatever they want, sell it as a toy, and just keep selling it until someone identified it as dangerous, reported it to the government, they went out and investigated, and eventually pulled it from the market. SO, you can see how easy this is to manipulate for unscrupulous manufacturers. Unfortunately, there’s only so many people in the toy regulation safety space in the government, and COUNTLESS potential outlets that could be selling unsafe toys - it’s just a game of whack-a-mole. Follow my tips in the video for how to decrease your risk, AND if you come across any toy that you think is unsafe, REPORT IT PLEASE! Report it at Saferproducts.gov. Ever have this happen with a toy you had? Please share it here! (One of our team members at No-Panic Parenting used to work in the government at the CPSC in child safety, and is an utter genius and expert on this!)
