I met with a patient who had her breast implants placed 41 years ago. Yes, 41 years ago. That is the longest I have ever personally seen implants last. It is amazing that they have held up for that long, but it is important to remember that breast implants are not lifetime devices. Over time, the outer shell naturally becomes thinner and weaker. As that happens, folds can develop in the implant, and those folds increase the likelihood of a tear or rupture. Eventually, every implant will need attention. Some women choose breast implant removal because of ruptures, scar tissue tightening (capsular contracture), or discomfort. Others come in for a breast implant exchange simply because their goals or bodies have changed over the years. It is completely normal to replace or remove implants after years of wear. Making a proactive plan helps ensure your breasts look their best throughout every stage of life. So how do we keep an eye on your implants while they are inside your body? The FDA recommends that five years after your original breast augmentation surgery, you should get either an MRI or an ultrasound. This allows us to see if there are any silent ruptures or leaks. After that, repeat these imaging tests every two to three years to ensure your implants are healthy and intact. Many patients are surprised to learn that leaks and ruptures are often silent, so these regular checkups are very important. There are three main reasons women come in for implant changes or removals. The first is for a refreshed look. Over time, your body changes, and your implants may no longer match your current goals. The second reason is complications like capsular contracture or visible rippling, which can be uncomfortable and affect appearance. The third reason is a personal decision to downsize, upgrade to a newer type of implant, or even remove implants completely for a more natural look. All of these choices are completely valid and part of a healthy approach to self-confidence.
