Jesus has come to redeem and restore us into the full life he created us to live (John 10:10). But experiencing this fullness of life invites us not only to an individual pursuit of Christ through personal spiritual habits, but also radically reorients all of our most intense and intimate relationships in life. Sexuality—something God has designed for our pleasure and joy—is often the epicenter of our pain and struggle. So Jeremiah Morris, lead pastor of Seven Mile Road Church in Houston, opened up John 4 and Jesus’s encounter with a Samaritan woman to address three realities that we must reckon with to find a life-giving understanding of sexuality: (1) We are all thirsty, longing for something, a bundle of desires. Jesus' conversation with a Samaritan woman in John 4 confirms what we know to be true: We are all thirsty and longing for satisfaction—physically, sexually, and spiritually. (2) Indulging our thirsts does not deliver satisfaction. We live in a sexualized moment when our core identity has been conflated with sexuality. But we all know there are boundaries (sex without consent, with children, with family members), but where do all the boundaries lie? Because we have eliminated essential guardrails, our sexuality has become so painful. Our unbounded pursuit of pleasure has left us more broken and anxious than any generation before. (3) Jesus alone delivers real satisfaction. In her encounter with Jesus, the woman is totally seen and exposed but still embraced in the way that we all long to be. She is able to leave what would depend on to quench her thirst, both literally and metaphorically, to tell everyone she knows that she has finally found what satisfies. The biblical boundaries for sex only within a life-long marriage between a man and a woman preserve its purpose of pointing us to the greater reality of enduring satisfaction that can only be found in Christ. Jesus has put all of our thirst on him so that we can be satisfied.
