Ticks are small arachnids, common in grassy and wooded areas where they hang out waiting for a human or animal host. They climb on the host and start looking for a place to suck blood. Because ticks regurgitate saliva into their hosts, they are very effective transmitters of disease. I always use insect and tick repellent when camping and hiking. However, they are not 100% effective. The amount and type of repellent I use depends on the situation. In my last camping trip, permethrin was applied to my outer clothing, backpack and ground cloth. I also used picaridin on my body and clothing that touches my skin. Reduce your chance of a tick bite by 1) staying away from areas with high tick populations, 2) wearing protective clothing and 3) using pesticides/repellents. Even if you follow these recommendations, you may occasional find ticks crawling on you. It is important to remove them quickly, before they attach. Conduct regular tick checks. The longer a tick sucks blood from its host, the greater the probability of disease transmission. If you receive a tick bite, carefully monitor your health for the next 30 days. Consult with a physician if you experience a rash, fever, headache, joint or muscle pains, or swollen lymph nodes. These can be signs of a number of tickborne diseases.
