LANDOVER, Md. -- Dorothy Hamill successfully defended her title and Robin Cousins edged defending champion Scott Hamilton Friday night to capture the NutraSweet World Professional Figure Skating Championships. The 31-year-old Hamill coasted in the ladies competition, scoring a 49.5 on her freestyle artistic routine for a total of 98.6. Elaine Zayak took second with 97.5. 'I was real lucky to find that song. I'm so happy it turned out so well,' said Hamill, 31, who did her artistic routine to 'Do the Bearcat,' a David Willcox composition her choreographer's stepson discovered. Tiffany Chin, competing in her first professional competition, and Rosalynn Sumners, who placed second last year, tied for third with 97.4 scores. Hamilton, who suffered an injury to his right leg three weeks ago, led the men's competition after the freestyle technical portion with a 49.7. But Cousins, who captured a gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics, received six 10s and a 9.9 for a total of 50. Hamilton needed a 49.7 to win, but managed a 49.6, skating to 'When I'm 64' for a tie at 99.3. Cousins was declared the winner based on his higher score on the freestyle artistic portion. 'I tried something new, my version of the moon walk, and people loved it,' said Cousins, 30. 'The people here are really wild and really got me going.' Toller Cranston, six-time winner of the Canadian Men's Championship, took third place with 98.7. Norbert Schramm, three-time winner of both the European Figure Skating Championships and West German Figure Skating Championships, fell three times during his final routine and was fourth with a 96.5. The Canadian pair of Paul Martini and Barbara Underhill, who won the 1984 World Figure Skating Championships, received the only perfect score of the night during the freestyle artistic number to capture the pair championships. They edged Kitty and Peter Carruthers, the adopted brother and sister pair, by one tenth of a point, 99.5 to 99.4. Carol Fox and Richard Dalley nipped Judy Blumberg and Michael Seibert to win the dance championship. ------------------------ #figureskating #フィギュアスケート #eiskunstlauf #фигурноекатание #pattinaggioartistico #patinageartistique thanks to Kim!
