Theodors travels motovlog. I decided to ride around Estonias second largest lake - Võrtsjärv. In this episode I look for gas and talk about Mother river (Emajõgi) and the waterway it was a part of. The Emajõgi (Mother river) is a river in Estonia, with a length of 100 km (62 mi), which flows from Lake Võrtsjärv through Tartu County into Lake Peipus (Peipsi järv). The Emajõgi has been widely used as a waterway and trade route for centuries. In the past, it has also been an obstacle for land transport between Northern and Southern Estonia, because the river flows in a low-lying and swampy valley. Of the few suitable locations for crossing the river, the town of Tartu has the most favorable conditions. That made Tartu an important trading center in Ancient Estonia. Pärnu–Viljandi–Tartu waterway is a supposed ancient waterway from Pärnu river to Navesti river, to lake Viljandi, to Tänassilma river, to lake Võrtsjärv and through Emajõgi, to Lake Peipus (Peipsijärv). This route has been deduced from old maps, where a continuous waterway is shown, and some writings which refer to possibility of taking a boat through Tänassilma river, lake Viljandi and Raudna river (which is believed to be the most questionable section for boats to get through). The existence of the waterway is also supported by writings which call both Mother river (Emajõgi) and Pärnu river by the same name. The existence of this waterway would also be an additional reason why the towns of Tartu and Viljandi become such trading hubs. Almost all of the written evidence of such waterway come from the Livonian War era, from 16'th century. Lake Võrtsjärv is a lake in southern Estonia with an area of 270 km² (104 mi²). It is the second largest lake in Estonia, after Lake Peipus (Peipsi järv) and the largest lake situated entirely within Estonia. The shallow lake above sea level and relatively shallow, with average depth of 2.7 m (8 ft 10 in). Shores of the lake are swampy in the South and sandy in the North. Around 35 species of commercially important fish are found in the lake. In 2010, Võrtsjärv was voted European Destination of Excellence. I ride a Honda GL1500C Valkyrie from 1997, with custom paint. I have been on this bike for 8 years now and can vouch for its comfort and reliability. Video was recorded with Garmin Virb Ultra 30 as my helmet camera, Insta 360 X2 as my secondary camera and Huawei P30 Pro as off bike camera, edited with Kdenlive version 24. 00:00 Wrong gas station 03:41 View to the lake 04:47 Mother river (Emajõgi)
