President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a sudden, unexpected declaration of emergency martial law on Tuesday night, the first such declaration since 1979. Immediately after the president's declaration, the Ministry of National Defense shifted to contingency mode. Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun who reportedly proposed the president issue the Martial Law Decree ordered a meeting of key military commanders and put the military on alert. Air Force units, including fighter jets, were also deployed for surveillance activities and patrol missions. Soon after, General Park An-su, the Army chief of staff, was named leader of the martial law command, and at 11 PM, he issued the first Martial Law Proclamation, banning all political activities, and placing media and publication outlets under the Martial Law Command's control. As lawmakers gathered one by one at the National Assembly complex to repeal martial law by holding a plenary session, around 2-hundred-80 soldiers reportedly from the Special Warfare Command and Capital Defense Command, attempted to breach the building. They were mostly armed with rifles and had equipment such as night vision goggles but it has not been confirmed whether they were armed with live ammunition, as some carried rifles with magazines, while others had them removed. Armed soldiers attempting to enter the main chamber faced resistance from parliamentary aides who blocked the entrance with desks and chairs and sprayed fire extinguishers. Some soldiers were even spotted breaking windows to get in. There were scuffles, but they did not resort to the active use of force, and it is widely speculated that the troops were deployed urgently and were less well-prepared with unclear mission directives. as the declaration of martial law was sudden. The standoff did continue though, until one-hundred-90 lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties unanimously passed a resolution at 1 AM demanding the repeal of martial law. Following the passage, the troops began to withdraw, and boarded military buses in a parking lot by the Hangang River near the National Assembly which departed at around 3:30 AM. The defense ministry dissolved the Martial Law Command at 4 AM and canceled the emergency meeting at the ministry.
