In this video, I’m going to talk about theory and help you understand it better using the analogy of a tree. Theory can be a daunting concept, but with my system, you’ll soon see that it’s actually quite simple to understand. Firstly, let’s think of theories as trees. They all start with a trunk, which represents the core, fundamental principles that define the theory. For example, feminism has the trunk of "sex and gender as key principles around which society is organised" and that "women are disadvantaged because of this". From this trunk, branches grow, which represent offshoots that are more specific and focused on particular things. For example, Marxist feminism, black feminism, liberal feminism, and radical feminism are branches of the feminist tree. These branches may share core principles but differ on certain details. Lastly, on the branches, fruit grows. These fruits are individual concepts, ideas, models, and typologies that are even more specific and specialist in their focus. For instance, on the radical feminist branch, you’ll find Kelly’s continuum of sexual violence, Monckton Smith’s domestic homicide timeline, and the patriarchal dividend. When writing about these fruits in your assignments, it’s crucial to acknowledge the branch and the tree they come from. This shows that you have a comprehensive understanding of theory and don’t just see the details. Using this tree analogy, you can easily understand any theory by breaking it down into these three parts: trunk, branches, and fruits. You can identify the core principles, the offshoots, and the specific concepts and ideas that emerge from it.
