𝑨𝒚𝒐𝒐, 𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒚! 𝑴𝒂𝒂𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒐! 𝑷𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆 𝒔𝒂 𝒎𝒊 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒚𝒈𝒐𝒏 𝒌𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒊! In the Cebuano-speaking Christmas, there was a blithesome folkway back in the days when carollers used to sing melodiously and rhythmically to a timeless story of the Nativity of the Christ. These songs were what they used to call the “daygun.” The daygun is a variety of traditional Christmas songs in Cebuano which comes from the word that means “to praise or to worship.” It is sung by a rag-tag bunch of singers in the community who hop from house to house offering these songs in exchange of gifts and alms. Unfortunately, it is a dying tradition. Even so, these 'unsung' hymns still carry with them the profound message and inspiration to listeners until today, expressing just how deep and reverent is the 'reason for the season,' of Mary's sufferings in labour, Christ's birth, life and death under persecution, and ultimately His great mission to redeem humanity from sin and punishment. This video features one of the versions of the Cebuano daygun called “Alabado,” which was performed by a group of anonymous adult carollers, and recorded on December 26, 2021 at a barangay in San Jose, Negros Oriental. The lyrics are also referenced from the performers, with slight edits.
