Development in databases advanced in the later 1960s as affordable disc storage became available. This seminar gives an opportunity to hear from one of the pioneers, who himself made an outstanding contribution to database technology. Expect a personal account on the history, with insights into the competing streams of development and the players involved. About the speaker Charles developed the IDS (Integrated Data Store), one of the first database management systems, when working at General Electric in America in the 1960s, and continued working on software systems at Cullinane (on IDMS) and later founded Bachman Information Systems, which specialised in CASE products. In 1977 Charles was elected a Distinguished Fellow of the BCS. Background For more see this Wikipedia entry on Charles Bachman. That also gives links to more detailed information. For further background about the software industry and database products that grew from the original database developments see the book by Martin Campbell-Kelly on the history of the software industry.
