Economic Boycott, Violence Against Dalits In Tamil Nadu For Entering & Defying Temple 'Ban'

In January, three incidents in Tamil Nadu came to light where Dalits protested and defied the opposition of upper-caste Hindus to enter temples. The news was widely celebrated as a positive development, a sign that change was happening at the grassroots level and that casteism was being challenged. However, what has been lost in the narrative is the backlash that the Dalit community has faced in the aftermath of these incidents. One such incident was from Muthu Mariyamman Temple in Thiruvannamalai district of TamilNadu. Nearly 300 men, women, and children belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) entered the temple on 30th January with full police protection in the presence of District Collector B Murugesh, Superintendent of Police (SP) K Karthikeyan, and Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Mandhagini. This happened after 80 years. For 80 years Dalit families were boycotted from entering the temple. Within a few days, however, things changed. The upper caste Hindus came back for their power.
