Poetry can give us language when words fail. T. Llew Jones was a Welsh language poet and writer but was most famous for his children’s writings. This poem compares a 13th Century German village tale of losing children, by an event which could’ve been prevented, to the Aberfan disaster, which also could’ve been prevented. I would normally translate the words for people to be able to understand it, but this is expressed in such a profound way in Welsh, that I wouldn’t dare to even attempt to translate it. In short, it speaks of the quietness and stillness of Hamelin. How each footstep was silent, the children’s toys left alone and their laughter gone. Today, we remember the 116 children and 28 adults tragically lost. Today, we remember the Aberfan disaster, the 21st of October, 1966.
