Get to know Assistant Professor of Marketing at HKU Business School, Theresa (Tess) Kwon. She holds PhDs in Marketing from the University of Pittsburgh and in Retail and Consumer Sciences from the University of Tennessee in the United States. Prior to her doctoral studies, she earned both MS and BS degrees in Fashion Marketing from Seoul National University in South Korea. Her research focuses on consumer behaviour, with an emphasis on shared and solo consumption and consumer wellbeing. Her dissertation – which won the prestigious SCP Schumann Dissertation Proposal Award (2022) and an honourable mention for the John A. Howard/AMA Dissertation Award (2024) – sheds light on novel factors that shape consumers’ decisions about whether to engage in consumption activities by themselves or with others in the first place. Ever wonder why homes get cluttered so easily? Professor Kwon’s current research uncovered an interesting pattern: “While people prefer to make purchase decisions on their own, they strongly prefer to involve their partners when disposing of items.” She found that consumers hesitated to make disposal decisions without their household partner, and this could lead to delayed disposal decisions. "This helps explain why homes get cluttered – products enter our homes quite easily, but getting rid of them? That's a different story," said Professor Kwon. In her classroom, she creates an inclusive learning environment where “every student feels like they belong and their voice matters,” encouraging active participation and meaningful engagement. #HKUBusinessSchool #GetToKnow #ProfessorInterview #NewFacultyMember #OurStories
