4/8/1969 Red Sox at Orioles Tony Conigliaro homers in first game of his comeback to baseball

This is a short video from the April 8, 1969 Major League Baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Orioles in Baltimore, which the Red Sox won, 5-4, in 12 innings. In the top of the 10th, Red Sox slugger Tony Conigliaro hit a two-run homer; it was his first game back after a beaning in August of 1967 that caused him to miss the rest of that season and the entire 1968 campaign. The game originally was broadcast on WHDH TV in Boston, and the announcers are Ken Coleman, Ned Martin, and Johnny Pesky. Coleman calls the homer, and one can hear the emotions of the dramatic moment in his voice as he reacts with Pesky. (After the win, Conigliaro did a long postgame interview with Martin; here's the link to it on my channel:    • 4/8/1969 Tony Conigliaro on-field intervie...   ) One of the rising stars in the game, the power-hitting Conigliaro suffered a devastating eye injury when he was beaned by Jack Hamilton during the 1967 Impossible Dream season. After a season off, a plan to come back as a pitcher was shelved when his eyesight improved enough to give hitting another shot, and he reclaimed his right field spot in spring training. This was Opening Day, and Conigliaro got a nice hand from the Memorial Stadium crowd before striking out swinging. He then walked, singled to center, and flied to left, before homering in the 10th off Pete Richert. After seemingly walking on air rounding the bases and then slapping five with the next batter, George Scott, before touching the plate, he embraced Ken Harrelson, whom he'd driven in. He then got congrats from the rest of his excited teammates, including his brother Billy (No. 4)! Frank Robinson hit a two-run shot of his own in the bottom half, though, so the game went on, and in the 12th, Congliaro walked, Scott singled, and Rico Petrocelli walked. With one out, Dalton Jones hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Tony C with the eventual winning run to cap the storybook return. Conigliaro would hit 20 homers and drive in 82 runs in 1969 and earn The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year award. He hit a career-high 36 home runs with 116 RBIs in 1970 before his eyesight began bothering him again. After a final comeback attempt in 1975, Conigliaro retired at age 30. Box score in comments.
