Marlborough Mop Fun Fair walk through, capturing the sights, sounds and atmosphere. The fun fair takes place in the High Street, Marlborough. This is the 'Little Mop'. The ‘Big Mop’ takes place one week later. The fair dates back to 1204 when fairs were used as a place for landowners to meet and hire suitable new employees. Job seekers would have with them something to represent their skills - a housekeeper would bring a mop or brush, and shepherds could be seen wearing tufts of wool. When a worker had been successfully hired, they would wear a bright ribbon. Hiring workers ceased during the 1800s and mop fairs became places for entertainment, market stalls and food. Today mop fairs attract all ages and offer fairground rides, food stalls and entertainment. Filmed & edited by Jane B
