Noxious Air: The Progress Dilemma | Kigali Global Dialogue 2023 Air pollution is pervasive, affecting billions of people around the world. Noxious fumes are the byproduct of transportation, energy production, industrial processes, and agriculture. Nearly the entire global population experiences levels of pollution exceeding those deemed healthy, especially those in lower-income countries and the most vulnerable populations within them. The health effects of air pollution are far-reaching, from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases to cancer. This panel will discuss the policy options for addressing air pollution, the political economy shaping action, and the social and economic factors that drive it. How have countries in South Asia, Africa and large parts of the emerging world addressed the issue of air pollution? While pollution has accompanied industrialisation and urbanisation in the past, can countries progress without experiencing decades of harmful air pollution? Speakers: Juliet Kabera Director General, Rwanda Environment Management Authority, Rwanda Shailly Kedia Senior Fellow and Associate Director, TERI, India Sonam Yangchen Chief Research Coordinator, Institute of Health Partners, Bhutan Sunoor Verma President, The Himalayan Dialogues, Nepal Moderator: Parisa Shakur Senior Lecturer, North South University, Bangladesh
