1984. Bunker diplomacy, security heats up at American embassies after attacks

February 24th, 1984. In this 20/20 Eyewitness News segment security measures are shown at U.S. diplomatic outposts, beginning in El Salvador and looking at the situation in Iran, Beirut even Paris and London. "Every American embassy took immediate measures to stop the suicide driver bomb threat. Here in Paris, a simple system is used. After each vehicle exits from the embassy a staff car pulls in place to block off the driveway." As the segment continues the attack in Kuwait is reviewed, where a suicide driver in an open truck took the lives of six. The embassy had requested additional secuirty measures, but they were not approved in time. The man who received the requests is interviewed about steps the diplomatic corps may take so the situation does not repeat. Clips of interviews with ambassadors, officials, and think take executives are interspersed throughout this video. Towards the end a prospective foreign service employee asks if he or his family is taken hostage, what does it mean the United States Government will not negotiate?
