Upper Assam and Lower Assam controversy created recently by MLA Mrinal Saikia || This is not the first time where Politician made a statement about lower Assam and Upper Assam || Always this kind of discrimination we can see from the Politician and for the vote bank they are playing such game with Assamese People || My Advise to all Assamese people not to give attention for such kind of statements as we all are Assamese || We should tell we are Assamese rather than lower Assam and upper Assam || Understand there is language and tone difference among us but our culture are same and we are Assamese || Actually the division of Assam into Upper and Lower Assam is based on the flow of the Brahmaputra River. The division of Assam into Upper and Lower Assam is primarily based on geographical and historical reasons rather than cardinal directions like North and South. Upper Assam is located to the east of the region, and it is characterized by its hilly terrain, tea gardens, and oil fields. The Brahmaputra River flows through Upper Assam, and the region is known for its biodiversity and rich cultural heritage. Lower Assam, on the other hand, is located to the west of the region and is characterized by its plains, agricultural lands, and the presence of major cities like Guwahati. Lower Assam is also known for its diverse ethnic communities and cultural traditions. The historical division of Assam into Upper and Lower Assam dates back to the colonial era when the British administration divided the region for administrative convenience and governance purposes. The division was based on factors such as topography, river systems, and economic activities prevalent in each region. Using the terms "Upper" and "Lower" to differentiate between the two regions has been a convention that has persisted over time and has become ingrained in the local culture and administrative setup. The terms have historical significance and are widely used to refer to the distinct characteristics and identities of each region within Assam. During the Ahom rule, water transport was the main mode of transport. As the mighty Brahmaputra flows from east to the west, the boatmen used to ask the travellers whether they would be going "Ujoni" i.e. upstream or "Namoni" i.e. downstream. Hence the name Ujoni Axom (Upper Assam) and Namoni Axom (Lower Assam) is derived. The Upper Assam division now contains 10 districts, that includes Biswanath, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Charaideo, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia.
