The Portuguese island of Madeira - Visiting the Botanical and Monte Palace gardens 2025

This is the first video that we have posted following a break after Christmas. Due to many factors we were not able to travel much during 2024 but 2025 looks far better and we are determined to make up for lost time. After a four week tour during the Christmas period across Germany and Austria we have spent time in the north of England and also returned for a week to Madeira. This video begins a series of presentations featuring our time on this wonderful Portuguese island. Based in the capital Funchal, we explore many parts of the island but first we visit two major attractions, the Botanic Garden and after wonderful ride on the cableway from that garden we ascend to Monte. The district of Monte is dominated by the church of Nossa Senhora Do Monte (Our Lady of Monte) within which rests the remains of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor, Karl. He spent his last years in exile here following his abdication at the end of WWI. A major attraction for the tourist is the chance to ride baskets that slide downhill towards Funchal guided by two locals along the steep streets. We also spend time in the glorious Monte Palace Garden. This is a gem of a garden among the many for which Madeira is famous.
