A video of the Isle of Mans famous Snaefell Mountain Railway on the first day of its 2022 operating season. Cars running that day were No.1 & No.5 with No.5 making the first run of the season. The weather at the top was sunny but with high winds which caused an early end to the days operation. Operations under these conditions are quite challenging for staff and safety is paramount. Due to a landslide that undermined one side of the track on the Laxey to Bungalow section, single line working was in force which meant a reversal was required for trains heading up the mountain. During this reverse on the second departure from Laxey No.1 lost contact with the conductor wire which resulted in the crew using a length of rope with a large nut tied to it to loop over the conductor and pull it down enough to make contact with the bow in order to regain power. After that piece of high drama, No.1 continued the climb to Bungalow with Agneash Waterfall, Mines Road, the site of the former Snaefell Mine and "The Victory" cafe being viewed from the tram. Once at the top of Snaefell No.1 stood being buffeted by the wind in the sunshine next to the station building. After No.1 started its journey down the mountain the conductor is seen struggling to remain upright while setting the points for the following service. On the way down in No.5 at one point I failed to realise I had pulled the microphone cable out so there was no sound for much of the journey between Snaefell and Bungalow. There is nothing wrong with your ears, just there is no audio for a minute or so! Further on toward Laxey the SMR shed site is passed and No.2 is seen outside. No.5 is then seen leaving Laxey passing behind the houses of Dumbell's Row. A while later No.1 is seen from the Agneash side of the valley heading down toward Laxey. Later on, at Bungalow No.5 is seen heading down the mountain with what became the last train of the day, services having been curtailed due to dangerously high winds at the top of the mountain. The wind was strong enough to blow the tripod off balance at this level. [4K source] 00:00 Laxey 06:25 Snaefell 09:08 Bungalow 19:05 Laxey 22:22 Bungalow
