By Mary Kachepa The Government has officially laid the foundation for the construction of the National Eye Hospital in Chongwe, marking a major milestone in Zambia’s healthcare development. The specialized facility will be built in collaboration with Christian Blind Mission (CBM), with CBM Zambia and Malawi Country Director Linda Nonde confirming a commitment of 45 million kwacha towards the project. During the groundbreaking ceremony held in Chongwe today, President Hakainde Hichilema, in a speech read on his behalf by Health Minister Elijah Muchima, announced that the hospital will serve as a national referral center. It will feature a bed capacity three times larger than that of the eye hospital at the University Teaching Hospitals. He emphasized the urgent need to address preventable diseases that lead to blindness among citizens. Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi reaffirmed the UPND Administration’s dedication to expanding health infrastructure across the country. Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo, in a speech delivered by Chongwe District Commissioner Evans Lupiya, highlighted the hospital’s potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the constituency. Senior Chieftainess Mukamambo II, represented by Princess Choolwe, described the hospital as a beacon of hope for many citizens, underscoring its significance in improving access to specialized eye care services nationwide. #ZambiaHealthCare #ChongweEyeHospital #CBMZambia #UPNDDevelopment #VisionForAll #HealthInfrastructure #HopeInSight #ZambiaNews
