In this video, I show a very simple example of an Internet of Things application. We are using MQTT, a lightweight "pub/sub" IoT communication protocol that enables connected devices to send data. The publisher in this example is an MSP430F5529 LaunchPad + CC3100 WiFi BoosterPack, which is connected to a potentiometer sensor. The subscriber in this example is the CC3200 WiFi LaunchPad, which features a single chip ARM Cortex MCU + WiFi device. The CC3200 LaunchPad is connected to a series of "daisy-chained" 8x8 LED matrices. When the potentiometer knob is turned on the publisher side, the CC3200 subscriber displays a message on the 8x8 LED matrices signifying whether or not the sensor knob is within a safe range. If the potentiometer data that is being sent is in a safe range, the message "STATUS: OK" is displayed. If the sensor data is in an unsafe range, the message "ALERT!!!" is displayed. In this example, we used ENERGIA, an open source, community-developed rapid prototyping tool for writing embedded firmware. Energia supports many of the TI LaunchPad kits & features many libraries & examples, including a library for MQTT/WiFi.
