We celebrate the 2nd Sunday in Lent with a focus on what it means to be righteous before God and how we receive that designation. Our Epistle Lesson is Romans 4:1-8, 13-17. Here the Holy Spirit though Paul explains why Abraham was declared to be righteous before God, not because of anything he could do but because of the gift of faith from God. The Sermon Hymn is #591 "This Is the Spirit's Entry Now". The Sermon is based on Romans 4:1-3 "Grace: Not Free, Just Free For You". In this message I use the two competing viewpoints of The Work Ethic vs. Entitlement to explain how Jesus did all the work so we could be declared innocent of sin (even though we commit them), and receive that by faith in a world where we earn what we have. Then I use the idea of Entitlement to caution our falling into Cheap Grace by making Jesus an excuse to sin.
