Edgeworthstown, Ireland, home of author Maria Edgeworth

Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford in Ireland, was home to author Maria Edgeworth for most of her long life. Jane Austen was one of the many who loved Maria's novels. She was the most financially successful author of the Regency era, and was also quoted as an inspiration by Sir Walter Scott. Maria's father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, moved his family to Ireland in 1782, when she was about 14 years old. She helped him manage the family estate, and continued to run it after his death. Today Maria is remembered in the town through various monuments, and at the Maria Edgeworth Visitor Centre. We visited the town in the summer of 2025.
