SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Weil, Gulbenkian CAM Director: “So, CAM (Centro de Arte Moderna – Modern Art Centre) reopens on the 20th of September, after having been closed for major redesigning by architect Kengo Kuma. We will have a new garden that was designed by Vladimir Djurovic the whole museum is now really nested in a whole garden, completely transparent and very much in touch with nature. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Weil, Gulbenkian CAM Director: “The competition was opened to all the architects - there were six Portuguese and six international artists, and the jury unanimously decided to go for Kengo Kuma. And when I arrived here, it seemed obvious to me that given the long-standing relationship between Portugal and Japan, inviting Japanese artists to present their work in this newly redesigned building by a Japanese architect would make complete sense.” 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Weil, Gulbenkian CAM Director: “We are launching...relaunching this museum with major exhibitions, the first one is the one we're in now which is an exhibition by Leonor Antunes, a Portuguese artist based in Berlin who has done a site specific composition, sculptural composition and also selected works by female artists in the collection. SOUNDBITE (English) Rita Topa, architect at Kengo Kuma and Associates: “When we first came to the brief of the project, we really were inspired by the garden of them you know the surroundings is so unique in the city, that we wanted…we didn't want the architecture to take space to the garden. We wanted actually to create more space for the garden. And so, this became the theme of the project, you know. So we tried to create this space that could... like an architecture movement, that we could create a new entrance for the museum, while at the same time, create a space where people could enjoy the garden.” 17.
