(10 Mar 1997) Natural Sound Protestors have taken to the streets of Mexico City to demonstrate against the government's handling of the economic crisis. The government has launched a series of belt-tightening measures since the 1994 peso devaluation crisis. The measures have sparked protests from almost all sectors of Mexican society. A large and angry crowd surrounded police cars in Mexico City, Monday, protesting against the government's failure to solve the country's massive debt problem. Protestors, demanding immediate government action to boost the economy, became an angry mob. They first circled and then rocked police cars. The protestors also demanded the release of four debtors. The four, members of the debtors group known as 'El Barzon', were arrested in January. El Barzon, a small business owners association, has been outspoken on what they see as the government's mishandling of the economy. The association was formed by small businesses who couldn't pay their debts in the wake of a massive hike in interest rates. Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo has said the country is recovering from an economic emergency and drastic measures are needed. But for these demonstrators at least, the economic recovery is simply too long coming.
