"Here's my fresh take on the ancient folk lament 'Jockey's Lament o'er the Hills and Far Away' – a haunting traditional English/Scottish tune dating back to the late 1600s. Early versions appear in Thomas D'Urfey's Wit and Mirth: or, Pills to Purge Melancholy (around 1706), where it's known as 'Jockey's Lamentation': poor Jockey pines for Jenny fair, who stole his heart and left him in despair, with that ever-longing refrain echoing 'o'er the hills and far away.'This melody has lived many lives – from pastoral heartbreak to military marches and nursery rhymes – but here I've returned to its roots as a tender, melancholic love lament.
