Development of effective multi-dimensional interventions for patients with cancer cachexia: Bridging clinical practice problems, mechanism-based interventions and context-relevant outcomes Cicely Saunders Institute Seminar by Dr Florian Strasser, MD ABHPM Associate Professor (PD) Oncological Palliative Medicine, Clinic for Oncology and Hematology, Department Internal Medicine & Centre for Palliative Care, Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Switzerland Cancer cachexia is a clinical problem that affects the majority of patients with advanced incurable cancer. It has high impact on quality of life of patients and distress of their family members, influences the effect and toxicities of anti-cancer treatments, and also has health economics implications. Together with clinical and academic cachexia experts, Dr. Florian Strasser has contributed to the classification framework of cancer cachexia, defining the three stages of pre-cachexia, cachexia, and refractory cachexia. In this seminar, Dr Strasser will review the challenges around cancer cachexia in clinical practice and highlight important research questions and hypotheses in this area. He will also review mechanisms of multi-dimensional interventions ranging from medical treatment to physical activity, nutrition therapy and psycho-oncological aspects, and discuss meaningful outcomes for targeted populations.
