Are online directories still worth using for a local business? In this video, I talk about how to use online directories properly to grow a local business, and why I still believe they have real value — even though some people think they are outdated. I recently made a video explaining why every local business needs a Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). That is without doubt the most important listing you can create. However, directories still play a supporting role in helping you spread your business presence across the internet. When you consistently list your business across trusted directories, you: • Increase your visibility in local search • Build authority with Google • Strengthen your NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone number) • Create additional backlinks to your website or Facebook page • Give customers more ways to find and contact you In this video I cover: • What a business directory actually is • Major UK directories such as Yell and FreeIndex • Map listings including Google Business Profile, Apple Maps and Bing Places • Trade platforms such as Checkatrade, Rated People, MyBuilder and Bark • Local and regional listings including council directories and Chambers of Commerce • Networking platforms like 4N I also share my honest experience. I’ve personally been found by customers through directories like FreeIndex and Yell, so I know they can work. They are not a magic solution, but when used properly, they help reinforce your online presence. Best practices I recommend: • Keep your Name, Address and Phone Number identical everywhere • Fully complete each profile with descriptions, services and photos • Focus on reputable directories rather than low-quality spam sites • Update your listings periodically • Add your website or Facebook page link wherever possible Directories should support your Google Business Profile, not replace it. If you are starting a new local business, your Google Business Profile should be one of the first things you set up — possibly even before your website.
