Meanwhile at The Pharr Library Atlanta in 1984 Miss Laverne Edwards Bar Promo Segments and Live Stand Up Larry Edwards was the maître d' at Gene and Gabe's, a renowned restaurant on Piedmont Avenue in Atlanta, GA. In 1982, Larry introduced the persona of Miss Laverne Edwards, captivating large audiences with dazzling performances at Upstairs at Gene and Gabe’s. As a celebrated female impersonator, Laverne starred in shows like I Love Laverne, Festival of Fantasies, Kitchen Magician Laverne, Lysistrata, and Aerobics with Laverne. Beyond Gene and Gabe’s, Laverne lit up the stages of Atlanta’s vibrant gay nightlife, performing at iconic venues like Backstreet and The Pharr Library. This video features promotional clips produced by Night Lites, Inc. for The Pharr Library, along with a live stand-up performance at the venue. Located at 550 Pharr Road in Buckhead (entrance from the rear), The Pharr Library originally opened as a straight nightclub before evolving into a hotspot for Atlanta’s gay community in the early 1980s. Tuesdays and Thursdays boasted a lively happy hour at ten, while Fridays became the ultimate after-work gathering. Its fashionable patrons were known for their impeccable style, often never repeating an outfit—perhaps single-handedly supporting the local Polo shop. Gene and Gabe’s, a beloved Atlanta institution throughout the 1970s and 1980s, was situated in the historic 1924 Morningside Shopping Center. It was a favorite dining spot of President Jimmy Carter and a cherished part of the city’s entertainment scene.
