Context: What is Comicsgate? (CG) Comicsgate is an anti-diversity backlash movement in the North American comics industry that began around 2017–2018 and was quickly promoted by The Daily Wire. Participants opposed what they viewed as “forced” progressive themes—diversity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and social justice messaging. Critics liken it to Gamergate, noting it devolved into online harassment of independent creators on both the left and right. Ethan Van Sciver’s Role Former DC Comics artist Ethan Van Sciver became Comicsgate’s figurehead through his YouTube channel and crowdfunded projects like Cyberfrog: Blood Honey (raising $628,000), Cyberfrog #2: Rekt Planet (raising $1,033,911), and more. Original members of Comicsgate accuse him of dishonestly co-opting the movement. Ethan now owns the trademark “Comicsgate.” Chronic delays on books—sometimes over five years—and frequent harassment of other creators have shifted Ethan’s public perception from industry veteran to a symbol of mismanagement and deception. Once a protest against 'cancel culture,' Comicsgate has become a business built on outrage, loyalty, and public shaming—mirroring the exclusionary tactics it once opposed. Despite years of delays and mounting backer frustration, Van Sciver continues to launch new campaigns. Questions linger about his true motivations and his honesty regarding his departure from DC Comics, his political beliefs, his mismanagement of funds, and possible financial backing from anonymous sponsors.
