VTT iBEX: Team Cellulose e-skin – Sustainable substrates for wearables

Nowadays, it's difficult to imagine a day without our smartphone, computer or tablet. But this reliance comes with an environmental burden - from mining minerals, use of non-recyclable materials to disposal of used devices. At VTT, we develop high performing materials that can contribute to our sustainable future. What if we could produce highly stretchable, soft and conformal nanocellulose films to substitute plastic based substrates used in conventional electronics and wearable devices? Cellulose e-skin is one of the nine VTT iBEX programme’s teams in 2021. Every year, VTT iBEX programme launches an internal call to source bold and visionary ideas to tackle grand and global challenges. The proposed solutions are evaluated based on problem definition, potential impact and what would be needed to solve the challenges.
