Driving around the back roads of Belgium, visiting only “off the beaten path towns”, we stumbled with Bouillon. Thinking the name was funny, not remembering my studies about the Crusades, I went on with a joke in my video, and not until I visited the castle, up above the town, I realized that this Bouillon, and Geoffrey de Bouillon were the same, the first king of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, after the siege and the taking of the holy city. Bouillon declined the title by saying that the real king of Jerusalem was Jesus. Godfrey was a Frankish knight, Lord of this town, and headed the First Crusade from 1096, until the end of it, 1099, becoming the first king of that region, even though he declined the title for the “protector of Jerusalem”. He died in Acre according to reports from the Arabs he was besieging, but other chroniclers place his death at Caesarea in June 1100 a.D. Later reports mention that he was poisoned by the emir of the same town.
