Dismantling the SS United States

At the Port of Mobile, the iconic SS United States is being dismantled. Still to this day, The fastest Ocean Liner… even faster than the Queen Mary … is being prepared to become an underwater habitat near the Gulf Coast city of Destin into the Gulf of America. Her last voyage was in 1969. At close to 100’ wide… she cut through the water like a knife in warm butter. What interesting stories she must have witnessed during her time of service. Sad to see her go. The smokestacks are actually the largest ever put on a ship. They’re in the shape of a teardrop, and actually 55 feet tall by 60 foot long noticed the fences at the top, they were put there to keep the smoke from coming back down on the decks behind them. The ships architect was William Francis Gibbs, and he was self taught, never studying naval architecture.… But he has been attributed to the design of many naval ships and vessels that are prominent even in this day. He was very conscious of safety and he wanted to design a ship that was fireproof, so this ship is constructed entirely of steel and aluminum. And as you come up to the bow, you will notice up on the deck, towards the front, you’ll see two small sets of oval port holes. And there’s a line between them that turns up at a 45° angle, and everything forward of that is Steel while everything to the rear of that is aluminum and this is the first ship that actually used aluminum construction on the upper decks. This made the ship lighter and faster. Everything inside the ship was actually made of metal. There was only one item inside the ship that was made of wood, and that was the piano. And the story is that the architect Gibbs, wanted the piano to be made out of aluminum, but in his meeting with George Steinway, Steinway refused. In fact, he brought a mahogany piano to a demonstration, doused it with gasoline and lit it on fire… And as quickly as it went up in flames – it went out again. And that was enough to convince Gibbs to allow that wooden piano to be placed onboard the ship. As we make our way to the front~ just to give you an idea of the size of this vessel, the letters that spell out the United States. They are 3 feet tall. In the front of this ship, there’s a forward hold, which would actually hold up to 45 automobiles as well. That’s why it’s riding higher on the front because right now it’s not loaded down. There is one of the original anchors up on the deck, but you cannot see it from here.
