Automatic driving systems currently being investigated at Scania feature functions that help drivers drive safer and free them up for other tasks while in traffic jams. Scania's automatic driving systems aim to help drivers by minimising the risk of human error. Using cameras, radar, ultrasound and wireless communication, the systems function as electronic crumple zones, with a larger radius than traditional physical ones. These systems aim to assist drivers in actively keeping the vehicle in its lane, thus increasing road safety. They detect other vehicles travelling behind and beside them, and can warn drivers and even intervene should they try to change lanes in a dangerous manner. The advanced driver systems of the future may also feature a function that automatically drives the truck through traffic jams, allowing the driver to undertake other tasks. These systems are developed in cooperation with universities and are co-financed by Swedish authorities.
