Panelists in this session discussed the transformative potential of union-financed and union-built affordable housing in Connecticut, as well as its powerful history in producing tens of thousands of longstanding affordable units. The AFL CIO Housing Investment Trust, simply one union pension fund active today in housing creation, has financed over $11 billion and built over 130,000 units of housing across the United States. In return, AFL CIO HIT has created over 210 million hours for construction workers and realized over $48 billion in economic benefits, both in tax revenues, as well as in wages and benefits for workers. Panelists discussed union-financed and -built housing from the 1920s into the 1970s in the Northeast, showcasing how this is a century-long model for building affordable housing at great scale and impact.
