In 1967, Psychology Professor Albert Mehrabian released two papers regarding the effect on an audience of inconsistencies between the verbal and non-verbal communications of a speaker. In doing so, Mehrabian unwittingly manifested the most malignant myth of modern oratory – the 7-38-55 principle. Public speaking “experts” jumped on this research proudly claiming that it PROVES content doesn’t matter, it’s all about your delivery! Style over substance!
