Extraordinary Archeology Lessons We previously showed you the Amisos Hill Tumulus, located in the Baruthane district on the west side of Samsun. Today, we will show the Canik Toptepe Tumulus located on the eastern side of Samsun. The tumuli on the east side, just like the west side, consist of 2 tumuli, 1 big and 1 small. Since the landscaping of the Tumuli on this side has not been completed yet, they are not open to visitors. 101 – What is a tumulus, what are its features? Since tumulus is one of the words that we do not hear in normal life today, it may not be known or misunderstood by many people. The tumuli in some places are thought to be small hills formed naturally by many. After giving the meaning and definition of the name of the tumulus, which we encounter especially in historical regions, let's briefly touch on its features. What is a tumulus? Although tumulus is used in our country and in some countries, it is a Latin word and its equivalent in Turkish is mound or kurgan. It is the name given to the small hills or mounds that were built or formed by piling up the soil on which there is a grave or cemetery in the tumulus. The sights of tumuli are historical places today. Because the tradition of making tumulus dates back to ancient civilizations, all places where tumuli are located are historical places. What are the characteristics of tumuli? Tumuli have only been seen in some civilizations in the world, and therefore they are only found on the territory of very few states. Our country, the Central Asian region, Russia and the Mexican country located in the Americas are the countries and regions with tumulus. The tumuli do not have a certain size and can be large or small. In some tumuli, the shape of the hill, the direction of the grave, the shape of the burial chamber, the burial style of the dead may vary. The years when the tumuli were first seen are 6,000 years ago. In other words, it goes back to 4000 BC. The first examples of tumuli were seen in a region called the Eurasian steppes. Later, it spread to other regions, especially to Anatolia and Thrace regions. It has also been found in areas called "Tumulus Cemetery" where there are more than one tumuli and even 20-30 tumuli. In these regions, although there are generally small Tumuli that are 2-3 meters in length, it has been observed that there are Tumuli with a height of 6-7 meters in some places. The tumuli were not only made of earth, but were found in the tumuli where the hill fillings were made of stone, and they were named "Taşlıtepe". Tumuli, which were built in a flat shape in the first years, started to be made in a pointed and conical shape later on. Over time, it has been used in soil, especially in clay soil, together with stones. Tumuli built in the early days were later placed in a room covered with dead wood and a tumulus was built on top of it. For example, the tomb in the Midas Tumulus was made of wood and its size is 5.15 meters by 6.20 meters. In the following years, sarcophagi were built to put the dead. The places where the tumuli were built generally stand out as hills, ridges and slopes. Since our country is located in a region that has hosted ancient Anatolian civilizations, there are many tumuli. In particular, some Tumuli are quite large. For example, Mount Nemrut, which attracts many tourists in Adıyaman, is home to one of the largest tumuli of our country. The height of the Midas Tumulus in Gordion is around 52-53 meters today, and its diameter is about 300 meters. However, it is estimated that the height of this tumulus was 80-90 meters when it was first built. Over time, there has been a reduction in height due to erosion due to soil structure. The largest tumulus found in Anatolia is the "Alyattes tumulus" in Bintepe. Stone blocks weighing more than 10 tons were used in this tumulus. The circumference of the Alyattes tumulus was calculated as 1115 meters. Its diameter is approximately 350 meters and it has a height of 68-69 meters. There are times when it is also referred to as the "Anatolian Pyramids" as an ascription to the Tumuli in the Bintepe region.
