The performance shares the hope of freedom and concludes with liberation after the Civil War. The work was written by Ossie Davis as an episode of a public television series in 1965, and was titled, "History of the Negro People, Part III, Slavery." Davis had already written the Broadway musical "Purlie Victorious" in 1961. Considered an unprecedented television effort at the time, the nine-part WNET docuseries, “History of the Negro People,” explores the little-known heritage and history of Black Americans, including enslavement, life after emancipation, and the ongoing fight for equality. We share this archival program in honor of Juneteenth, a federal holiday celebrated on June 19th that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
