A lot of people online insist that the modern world is broken, soulless, or actively worse than the past. I don’t buy it. I needed a new blanket in the middle of a New England winter. As I ordered it, unboxed it when it arrived the next morning, and experienced greater warmth than my previous blanket, I was reminded of how absurdly capable modern life actually is with rapid delivery, price transparency, reviews, budgeting tools, loyalty programs, transit systems, and memberships that genuinely pay for themselves if you use them intentionally. That doesn’t mean everything is perfect. There are real tradeoffs: excessive delivery fees, subscriptions that exist purely to extract money, car dependency outside major cities, and design choices that prioritize efficiency over experience. But pretending we live in a dystopia ignores how much easier, warmer, safer, and more flexible life is for the average person compared to almost any other time in history. This isn’t a tech-bro victory lap or a “just consume” argument. It’s a case for selective adoption of modern tools where they actually improve life, skipping the ones that don’t, and refusing the reflexive pessimism that says everything now is worse by default. The modern world has flaws. Every era does. But if you pay attention, it’s also quietly incredible.
